EPTAC Technical Application Guide: Semi-Dry Process for Cationic Starch Production

2,3-Epoxypropyltrimethylammonium chloride (EPTAC, CAS No. 3033-77-0) is a reactive cationic etherifying agent used to introduce quaternary ammonium functionality into starch and other suitable polysaccharides. This guide summarizes a semi-dry process for cationic starch production, including the reference operating conditions, procedure, dosage calculation basis, and an example formulation.

The information below is presented as a technical reference for process evaluation. Actual operating conditions and dosage requirements should be confirmed through laboratory or production trials using the selected starch, EPTAC grade, equipment, and target degree of substitution (DS).

For product identity, available grades, quality parameters, and documentation, see the Aure Chemical EPTAC product page (CAS 3033-77-0).

1. Process Overview

The reference process is a semi-dry etherification route for preparing cationic starch using solid EPTAC and sodium hydroxide under controlled mixing and heating conditions.

Starch Charge1,000 kg
Reaction Temperature70–80 °C
Reaction Time3–4 hours
Target Degree of Substitution (DS)0.03
Starch MoistureApproximately 20%
Liquid Caustic Soda10 kg, diluted with water before addition
Solid Etherifying Agent30–35 kg EPTAC

The source procedure refers to the solid etherifying agent as “ETA” in one operating step. This guide uses the product name EPTAC (CAS 3033-77-0) consistently.

2. Procedure and Operating Conditions

  1. Charge the starch: Charge 1,000 kg of starch into the mixer and start agitation.

  2. Add the caustic soda solution: Add 10 kg of liquid caustic soda. Dilute the caustic soda with water before addition and spray the solution into the mixer while continuing agitation. Maintain the starch moisture at approximately 20%.

  3. Add the solid etherifying agent: Disperse and add 30–35 kg of solid EPTAC directly into the mixer. Continue mixing to distribute the reagent through the starch.

  4. Carry out the reaction: Raise the temperature to 70–80 °C within approximately 30 minutes. Maintain the reaction at this temperature for 3–4 hours.

  5. Finish the product: Cool and discharge the material. Pulverize, sieve, weigh, and package the finished cationic starch.

The reference guide does not specify the concentration of the liquid caustic soda or the quantity of dilution water. These details should be confirmed with the process owner and established for the actual equipment and production conditions before use.

3. Dosage and Calculation Basis

The etherifying-agent dosage is determined according to the target degree of substitution (DS), the dry-basis starch quantity, the estimated reaction efficiency, and the active content of the EPTAC product.

Theoretical EPTAC Dosage

Theoretical dosage = Target DS × Dry-basis starch quantity ÷ 162 × 151.5

Actual EPTAC Dosage

Actual dosage = Theoretical dosage ÷ Reaction efficiency ÷ Product active content

Calculation basis:

  • 162 is the molecular weight of the anhydroglucose unit in starch.

  • 151.5 is the molecular weight of the etherifying agent used in the calculation.

  • The reference guide gives an estimated reaction efficiency of 70–85%.

  • Reaction efficiency and product active content should be entered as decimal fractions in the actual dosage calculation.

Sodium Hydroxide Dosage

The reference guide states that sodium hydroxide dosage should be determined based on the etherifying-agent charge, using a molar ratio of:

NaOH : EPTAC = 0.8 : 1

4. Example Formulation for Target DS 0.03

The following example is reproduced from the supplied technical guide as a reference formulation.

Starch100 g
Solid Etherifying Agent3.0–3.8 g
Sodium Hydroxide0.72 g
Target DS0.03

Dosage verification note: The example formulation and the general dosage formula are both reproduced from the reference guide. Before applying the example to a specific EPTAC grade or scaling it up, verify that the example dosage is consistent with the selected product's active content and the actual reaction efficiency used in the calculation.

5. Process Considerations

  • Starch moisture: The reference process specifies approximately 20% starch moisture. Moisture measurement and adjustment should be consistent throughout the batch.

  • Reagent distribution: The procedure calls for dilution and spray addition of the caustic soda solution, followed by mixing after the solid etherifying agent is added.

  • Temperature and reaction time: The stated reference conditions are 70–80 °C and 3–4 hours. Confirm the suitable operating profile through process trials.

  • Dosage basis: Calculate the required EPTAC charge using the dry-basis starch quantity, target DS, estimated reaction efficiency, and the active content stated in the applicable product COA.

  • Scale-up: Mixer capacity, agitation, heat transfer, moisture distribution, and the characteristics of the starch and EPTAC grade should be evaluated before transferring the reference conditions to a different production scale.

6. EPTAC Product Information and Quality Documentation

The suitability of EPTAC for cationic starch production should be assessed against the required active content, residual epichlorohydrin level, and other applicable product specifications. Review the current batch-specific COA and product SDS before confirming the material for a production trial.
