Fragrance Aldehydes and Paraxonal | Aure Chemical
Fragrance aldehydes offer a wide range of odor effects, so the aldehyde group alone is a poor basis for substitution. A useful comparison starts with the exact chemical identity, the intended accord and the finished product base.
This guide considers Paraxonal and related aldehydes listed by Aure Chemical. It connects the product shortlist to sample evaluation for fine fragrance and home care, while keeping synthesis intermediates distinct from ingredients selected mainly for their odor.
Place Paraxonal in the right odor comparison
Paraxonal is listed under CAS 5462-06-6. IFF's Canthoxal profile for the same CAS number identifies 3-(4-methoxyphenyl)-2-methylpropanal and describes an anise and fennel direction with herbal and light fruity aspects. This provides a starting point for a sample brief focused on an anisic or herbal effect.
Use that identity to define the comparison, then evaluate the offered grade in the actual composition. A shared CAS number does not prove that two commercial products have identical impurity profiles, odor quality or certification status. Ask for the specification and a sample of the material being quoted.
Compare distinct aldehyde groups
Organize the shortlist around the effect being investigated. Aliphatic aldehydes, substituted aromatic aldehydes and cinnamic aldehyde derivatives deserve separate comparisons. The following directory identifies candidates and the questions to resolve; it does not recommend equal use levels or direct replacements.
| Ingredient | CAS number | Selection focus |
|---|---|---|
| Octanal | 124-13-0 | Aliphatic C8 aldehyde; compare with other aliphatic candidates. |
| Undecanal | 112-44-7 | Linear C11 aldehyde; distinguish from undecylenic aldehydes. |
| 2-Methylundecanal | 110-41-8 | Branched aldehyde; distinguish from linear undecanal. |
| Paraxonal | 5462-06-6 | Substituted aromatic aldehyde; evaluate the anisic herbal direction. |
| Helional | 1205-17-0 | Fresh floral candidate; investigate compatibility with the intended base. |
| Bourgeonal | 18127-01-0 | Evaluate separately in the floral brief; confirm identity and grade. |
| Precyclemone B | 52474-60-9 | Confirm the commercial identity and technical profile before trials. |
| Hexyl Cinnamic Aldehyde | 101-86-0 | Hexyl cinnamic aldehyde derivative; compare within the floral shortlist. |
| Amyl Cinnamal | 122-40-7 | Amyl cinnamal; do not assume equivalence with the hexyl derivative. |
| alpha-Methylcinnamaldehyde | 101-39-3 | Alpha-methyl derivative; distinguish from other cinnamic aldehydes. |
| Campholenic Aldehyde | 4501-58-0 | Terpene-derived aldehyde; define odor evaluation or intermediate use. |
Build separate tests for fine fragrance and home care
In fine fragrance development, compare candidates in the intended solvent system and composition. Record the initial impression and the later evolution of the accord. Check appearance as well as odor, especially when the brief requires a clear liquid or when the material is being combined with a new carrier.
In home care, test the real product base. Its pH, surfactants and other ingredients can change the outcome. Storage evaluation should include odor retention, odor distortion, color and physical compatibility. An acceptable result in one base is not evidence of performance in another.
IFF describes Helional as a green floral material with an ozonic aspect. Its published stability ratings also vary by application, including a weaker fabric-conditioner rating than its fine-fragrance rating. That example illustrates why a fresh floral profile alone cannot establish suitability for every home-care formula.
Distinguish an odor ingredient from a synthesis intermediate
Campholenic aldehyde also connects this product group to terpene chemistry. If it is being purchased for further conversion, define the required identity and stereochemical composition rather than relying on the broad trade name. The NIST record for CAS 4501-58-0 specifies an R stereochemical identity.
For context on its relationship to pinene oxide, see terpene epoxides as fragrance intermediates. A literature route to a campholenic aldehyde product does not by itself establish that its stereochemical composition matches a particular commercial grade.
Qualify the sample and document the approved grade
Ask for identity and assay methods, a representative certificate of analysis and the current safety data sheet. Agree which color, water or related-substance tests are relevant to the project. Odor evaluation should use a consistent dilution and a retained reference, with acceptance criteria recorded before the first repeat order.
Check applicable ingredient restrictions for the intended finished-product category using the current IFRA Standards and supplier information. IFRA guidance distinguishes mixture conformity documents from raw-material information. Product-specific Kosher or Halal certificates should also be checked for the quoted grade when required.
